From Tragedy to Possibility

On December 30, 2008, Jennifer Stukey, Acupuncturist, Chinese Herbalist, and Yoga teacher, received a devastating phone call that her office at 10716 Little Patuxent Parkway had caught fire in the early morning hours.
On that freezing morning, with snow on the ground, Jennifer rushed over to see what damage had occurred. "The sights, smells and experience were both devastating and amazing. It was a true moment of being present. I couldn't be anywhere else," Jennifer Stukey recalls.
As she got in her car, with her sooty belongings and her emptiness of mind, she recalled a saying that one of her acupuncture teachers had said repeatedly throughout her training; "My barn burned to the ground and now I can see the moon."
In the midst of this extraordinary event, Jennifer had hope and felt that something new was on the horizon that may not have been possible if the fire hadn't happened.
Now, 11 months later, Stukey has created Columbia's first-of-its-kind wellness center, Awaken Wellness. Opening its doors on November 1st in its brand new 3,000 square foot suite on Minstrel Way, Awaken Wellness is providing exceptional care to the community through Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Therapeutic Massage, and Yoga classes.
Over the last 4 years in private practice, Jennifer has watched her colleagues struggle with building their practices. Part of Awaken Wellness's mission is to provide an environment for practitioners of the healing arts to move into their dreams of an ideal practice.
Jennifer learned when she decided to specialize in women's health that having a clientele that she was passionate about working with created success. She has encouraged the practitioners at Awaken Wellness to do the same.
In this time of economic struggle, the community needs wellness. Now more than ever, the community needs each other. Now more than ever, the community needs jobs and that is what Awaken Wellness has created. Awaken Wellness is a safe place where people can let go of the stresses of everyday life.
For example, Awaken Wellness's yoga classes are designed to encourage and engage students of all levels. Different from most yoga studios, the center's classes are mostly multi-level classes, meaning that the new student and the well-versed student practice together in a supportive environment, thus creating community. This is one of the many practices that sets Awaken Wellness apart from other wellness centers.
No matter which side of the health care issue you're on, there is an agreement that preventative health care should be a larger part of our health plan. Awaken Wellness is offering the modalities necessary to change our health care system from an illness-based system of medicine to a wellness-based system of medicine.
Awaken Wellness is a place where the healing arts is helping people awaken to the fullest possibilities of their lives.
